SUBTONE is one of the most interesting bands the European jazz scene boasts of. Originally a pure Berlin band, most of the members live in New York City now. When they had a triple triumph at the International Jazz Competition Jazz Tremplin in Avignon 2008 the reputation of trumpeter Magnus Schriefl, saxophonist Malte Dürrschnabel, pianist Florian Höfer, bassist Ruben Samama and drummer Peter Gall went abroad.
They have hit club and festival stages about 120 times by now. Highlights were the Bohemia Jazz Fest in front of Dave Holland and Steve Coleman and two much appraised concerts at the Jazz Baltica Festival in Salzau.
Appearing in the classical quintet format the band has nevertheless its very own sound - away from well known clichés. The colourful instrumentation and the refined compositions give their special charm to SUBTONE.

Subtone ist eine der interessantesten Bands, die die europäische Jazzszene zurzeit zu bieten hat. Anfangs noch als reine Berliner Formation gegründet, leben die Musiker von SUBTONE mittlerweile zum größten Teil in New York.
Spätestens seit ihrem dreifachen Triumph beim internationalen Jazz-Wettbewerb Tremplin Jazz in Avignon 2008 sind Trompeter Magnus Schriefl, Saxophonist Malte Dürrschnabel und Pianist Florian Höfner, der neu zum Ensemble gekommene Bassist Ruben Samama (Gewinner des Deloitte Jazz Awards 2010) und Schlagzeuger Peter Gall auch außerhalb Deutschlands ein Begriff.
Schätzungsweise 120-mal stand Subtone in Clubs und bei Festivals bisher auf der Bühne. Höhepunkte wa-ren die Auftritte beim Bohemia Jazz Fest in Tschechien im Vorprogramm von Dave Holland, Steve Coleman oder Al Foster, sowie zwei gefeierte Konzerte beim Festival Jazz Baltica in Salzau.
Obwohl Subtone in der klassischen Quintett-Besetzung auftritt, hat die Band doch einen ganz eigenen Sound kultiviert, der sich deutlich von traditionellen Klischees abhebt. Die farbenreiche Instrumentierung sowie die durchdachten und einfallsreichen Kompositionen sind es, die den besonderen Reiz von Subtone ausmachen.
