rec. 1992-1996
Daniel Schnyder's new CD "Tarantula" shows his genuine synthesis of two traditions without reducing the rhythmical strength of improvised jazz or the contrapuntal structure of classical music. Schnyder's extraordinary drummerless jazz septet (featuring virtuoso players like Hubert Laws, Mike Mossman, Jim Pugh, and Dave Taylor) can be heard in two sessions including a tune based on Carl Maria von Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" and dedications to Antonio Carlos Jobim and Eric Dolphy. Two more sessions present Schnyder as a saxophone soloist with a carefully chosen string quartet (1st violin: Alejandro Rutkauskas) and with the NDR Philharmonic, Hannover.
"The music of TARANTULA is a startlingly beautiful and evocative combination of European chamber music and American jazz" (Christine Crowther).
