In 2010 the Pascal Schumacher-Jef Neve duo was presented in the “Rising Stars“ concert series at the largest classical concert halls in Europe. This means: The music performed by Pascal Schumacher (from Luxembourg) and Jef Neve (from Belgium), two of the most accomplished new players in European jazz, is far removed from the old jazz clichés that usually serve as the basis for jam sessions. Rather it is an improvised art form inspired by very different musical directions and genres. “Actually, what we do is not jazz at all,” says Pascal Schumacher. German Jazz thing magazine explains: “Pop, rock, classical – there is a bit of everything in it. Yet the way the both of them would interact is the jazz way. Definitely!”
Among Pascal and Jef’s influences are the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, American composer John Adams, New York-based ensemble Bang On A Can, pop/rock/electro acts like Radiohead and Coldplay and jazz pianist Keith Jarrett as well as Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, Robert Schumann, Johann Sebastian Bach and many others. Their duo effort may be called pop-infused contemporary -- or classical-infused jazz -- or rock-infused improvisational music. Characterized by sudden cuts, scene changes and surprising turns, the music also opens itself to free association and peaceful flows of colors, pictures and moods.
Following the 3-day recording session for their studio CD “Face To Face” at Sendesaal Bremen, Germany, Pascal and Jef gave a live concert at the same place on the third day: "Face To Face In Bremen". This concert came along like an explosion of unburdened creativity brimming with fantasy and joy. Beside four original tunes from the CD repertoire, Pascal and Jef chose two bebop standards: Thelonious Monk’s “Hackensack” (named after the town where Rudy Van Gelder’s studio was situated) and Bud Powell’s “Hallucinations” (also recorded by Miles Davis as “Budo”). The concert was recorded strictly “the old way” – purely analog – by engineering wizard Walter Quintus and is available on 180-g virgin vinyl exclusively. For the recording Quintus made use of Neumann mikes only. No compressor or limiter, no EQ or additional reverb were used.

Innerhalb der „Rising Stars“-Konzertserie wurde das Pascal Schumacher-Jef Neve-Duo in den größten klassischen Konzertsälen Europas präsentiert – von Stockholm bis Barcelona, von Birmingham bis Athen. Das bedeutet: Die Musik des Luxemburgers Schumacher und des Belgiers Neve hat sich weit von den alten Jazzklischees entfernt, die bis heute die Grundlage von Jamsessions bilden. Sie ist vielmehr eine Improvisations-Kunst, die sich aus vielen musikalischen Strömungen und Genres speist. „Eigentlich machen wir überhaupt keinen Jazz“, sagt Schumacher. Das Magazin Jazz thing präzisiert: „Pop, Rock, Klassik, ein bisschen von allem. Aber die Art, wie die beiden interagieren, so etwas gibt es nur im Jazz. Definitiv!“
Zu den Einflüssen, die in der Musik des Duos hörbar werden, gehören unter anderem das Esbjörn Svensson Trio, der amerikanische Komponist John Adams, das New Yorker Ensemble Bang on a Can, Pop-Rock-Elektro-Acts wie Radiohead und Coldplay, der Jazzpianist Keith Jarrett oder auch Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, Robert Schumann oder J.S. Bach. Man könnte daher von Pop-beeinflusster zeitgenössischer Musik sprechen, von klassisch beeinflusstem Jazz oder Rock-beeinflusster Improvisationskunst. Die Duo-Musik von Pascal Schumacher und Jef Neve zeichnet sich aus durch plötzliche Schnitte, Szenenwechsel, überraschende Wendungen, öffnet sich aber auch immer wieder der freien Assoziation und dem ruhigen Fluss von Farben, Bildern und Stimmungen.
Im Anschluss an die dreitägige Aufnahme-Session für ihre Studio-CD „Face To Face“ (im Sendesaal Bremen) gaben Schumacher und Neve ein Live-Konzert vor Publikum am selben Ort: "Face To Face In Bremen". Bei diesem Auftritt, der vor Einfallsfreude und Spiellust glänzt, explodierte ihre unbelastete, freie Kreativität. Neben vier eigenen Stücken aus dem Repertore der Studio-CD wählten die beiden auch zwei Bebop-Standards: Thelonious Monks „Hackensack“, benannt nach dem Ort, wo Rudy Van Gelders Studio lag, und Bud Powells „Hallucinations“, das von Miles Davis auch unter dem Titel „Budo“ aufgenommen wurde. Die Tontechniker-Legende Walter Quintug nahm das Konzert streng „nach alter Schule“ auf – rein analog – und verwendete dabei ausschließlich Neumann-Mikrofone. Die Konzertaufnahme ist exklusiv auf 180-Gramm-Vinyl erhältlich.
